At the IEC building, our Special Education Department is dedicated to supporting every child’s unique learning needs. We offer a variety of programs, including Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT), where a general education and special education teacher work together in the same classroom; Consultant Teacher (CT) services, which provide extra help in the general education setting; 12:1:1 classrooms that offer more individualized support with a smaller group of students; and a 15:1 math class designed to give students extra time and attention in building their skills. No matter the program, our goal is always the same—to create a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel valued, confident, and ready to succeed.
The 12:1+1 Special Class provides a highly structured learning environment for students whose disability-related needs require specialized instruction and support.
Students generally demonstrate significant needs in academic achievement, communication, language development, and or adaptive skills. A certified special education teacher and program aide provide individualized, evidence-based instruction aligned with each student's IEP goals. Social-emotional learning, communication, and adaptive skills are integrated throughout the school day, with related services provided as recommended by the CSE. The program promotes academic growth, self-regulation, independence, and participation with nondisabled peers whenever appropriate.
The 8:1+2 Special Class Program provides a highly structured and supportive learning environment for students whose primary needs are in the areas of social-emotional development and behavior. The program emphasizes the development of prosocial behaviors, self-regulation, coping strategies, and positive peer interactions while providing individualized academic instruction. Classes include up to eight students, one certified special education teacher, and two aides, ensuring consistent support and opportunities for individualized instruction throughout the school day.
Students receive individualized instruction aligned with New York State learning standards through evidence-based, adaptive instructional programs and hands-on learning experiences that support academic, communication, social-emotional, and self-regulation skills. Instruction is tailored to each student's unique strengths and needs while fostering meaningful growth and success.
